I’m going to be honest. Medical weight loss should involve a lot more than walking into a clinic, asking for an injection, and walking back out.
GLP-1 medications can be safe and effective tools. They have changed obesity medicine in a big way, but I still need to know the patient.
Why have you gained weight? What have you already tried? What does your health history look like? Is medication appropriate? Which medication makes sense? What do we need to monitor?
And once the weight starts coming off, how are we going to help you keep it off?
That is what comprehensive medical weight loss in Gilbert, Arizona should look like.
Obesity Is a Disease
This is important.
Obesity is a chronic disease. I prefer to say a patient with obesity because the disease does not define the person.
There can be a lot going on behind weight gain.
Genetics matter. Family history matters. Hormones, medications, sleep, aging, nutrition, activity, stress, and other medical conditions can all play a role.
Some patients have struggled with weight since childhood. Others feel like their body changed later in life and what used to work suddenly stopped working.
That is why I want to understand the whole picture.
Simply telling someone to eat less and exercise more does not explain why they are struggling or what may actually help.
We Have More Than One Medication
Most people hear “medical weight loss” now and immediately think of one or two injectables.
We have a much bigger tool belt than that.
There are several medications we can use in obesity medicine, and they do not all work the same way. One may be a great fit for one patient and a poor fit for another.
Sometimes we start with one medication and move to another. Sometimes we use medications together. Sometimes we do not need medication at all.
If someone develops side effects, I want to know why. Is the dose too high? Is this the wrong medication? Is there another medical issue we need to address?
Those decisions matter.
Starting a medication also does not mean you will automatically stay on that exact medication forever.
The Scale Does Not Tell Me Everything
Yes, I want to know your weight.
I also want to know what kind of weight you are losing.
Are you losing muscle? Are you maintaining muscle? Are you gaining muscle? What is happening with your health markers?
That is why medical weight loss at Activated Health & Wellness may include blood work and body-composition monitoring.
If you lose weight very quickly and lose a lot of muscle with it, I am not going to call that a win.
We want to protect your health while the weight comes off.
Lifestyle Still Matters
Medication does not replace the basics.
We still need to talk about food. We need to talk about protein. We need to talk about movement, sleep, stress, and what your life actually looks like.
I can tell you to “eat your protein,” but if you leave asking, “Okay, what does that mean?” then I have not helped you enough.
What are your protein sources? Are you eating enough? Are you moving your body? Can we safely add strength training? What changes are realistic for you?
That is where the real work happens.
Getting the Weight Off Is Only Half the Conversation
From the beginning, I am thinking about two questions.
How do we help you get the weight off?
How do we help you keep it off?
I do not want to help someone lose weight and then say, “Great, see you later.”
Life keeps happening. Hormones change. Stress changes. Schedules change. We age.
Because obesity is a chronic disease, you may need support at different points along the way. You may not need to see us as often once you are doing well, but our goal is to remain one of the resources you can come back to.
GLP-1 medications and other weight-loss medications can be powerful tools. They work best when we choose them thoughtfully, monitor them properly, protect your muscle, support your lifestyle, and build a plan that makes sense long term.
