Emerging Weight Loss Medications: What You Need to Know

Emerging Weight Loss Medications: What You Need to Know

Emerging Weight Loss Medications: What You Need to Know

Author: Dr. Melody Medawar Rodarte DO, FACP

Updated 8/10/2026

Weight loss medications are changing quickly, and I understand why people feel confused. Every week, there seems to be a new injection, pill, peptide, study, or social media expert telling you exactly what your body needs.

Here’s the thing: your TikTok algorithm is not a medical degree.

GLP-1 medications have received most of the attention, but they are not the only option. There is a whole range of medications that may support weight loss, and the right choice depends on your health history, symptoms, goals, current medications, and how your body responds.

I don’t believe medicine is one size fits all. Weight loss medicine should not be either.

Weight Loss Medications Go Beyond GLP-1s

GLP-1 medications can be powerful and helpful tools. However, they are only one part of obesity medicine.

There are multiple anti-obesity medications available today. Some are used alone, while others may be combined when medically appropriate. A patient who has reached a plateau may benefit from a different medication or combination. Another patient may need help with blood sugar, food noise, cravings, or another condition affecting weight.

Sometimes medications such as metformin are used off label, meaning the medication is prescribed for a purpose beyond its original FDA-approved indication. This is not unusual in medicine. What matters is that the provider understands the medication, the evidence behind it, the patient’s medical history, and how to monitor its effects.

The goal is not to chase the newest drug. The goal is to find the safest and most effective option for the person sitting in front of us.

Newer Does Not Automatically Mean Better

Emerging medications can be exciting, but excitement should not replace good medical care. Clinical trials, new indications, peptides, and medication combinations continue to expand the options available to patients.

Before starting any weight loss medication, we need to ask important questions:

  • Do you already have digestive issues, hair loss, or difficulty eating enough protein?
  • Are you taking medications for diabetes or high blood pressure that may need adjustment?
  • Have we reviewed your medical history, laboratory results, and nutritional needs?
  • Is the medication coming from a reliable and properly regulated source?
  • What is the plan for follow-up, side-effect management, and long-term care?

That matters. A medication can affect more than the number on the scale.

Monitoring Protects More Than Your Progress

The most common side effects of many weight loss medications involve the digestive system, including nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. Patients may also experience hair loss, especially when weight comes off too quickly or protein intake is inadequate.

Some medications can affect nutrient levels. Metformin and GLP-1 medications, for example, may contribute to lower vitamin B12 levels. Eating less may also reduce iron or other nutrients.

Blood sugar and blood pressure can improve as weight decreases, which is wonderful, but existing medications may then need to be reduced. This is why follow-up is not an optional extra. It is part of using these medications safely.

The Right Dose Is the Dose That Works for You

You do not automatically need to increase a GLP-1 dose because you finished four injections. We look for the least amount of medication necessary to create a safe and effective response.

I want patients to have appropriate hunger. The goal is not to eliminate hunger completely or make someone force themselves to eat. We want less food noise, more appropriate portions, and enough appetite to nourish the body and protect muscle.

At Activated Health & Wellness, weight loss is more than an injection. We look at the whole person and walk alongside you with monitoring, education, and a realistic plan.

Health & Wellness. Done Differently.
