Botox Basics

Botox Basics

Author: Dr. Melody Medawar Rodarte DO, FACP

Botulinum toxin, most commonly known as Botox, is the most common non-surgical procedure cosmetic procedure on the market.

Botulinum toxin, most commonly known as Botox, is the most common non-surgical procedure cosmetic procedure on the market. Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau are other forms of purified botulinum toxin. Over 4 million procedures have taken place since 2015. It isn’t only used by women. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons Reports that treatment for men has increased by 337% since 2000.

FDA approved cosmetic Botox for three dermatological purposes: in-between the eyebrows (frown lines), the lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), and forehead lines. There are a few off label uses of the product.  Botulinum toxin is very safe when administered by a professional.

When our facial muscles contract, we make wrinkles. As we age, wrinkles increase in number and depth secondary to the loss of collagen and other factors.  Static lines occur when the wrinkles stay even when our face is at rest.  It essentially temporarily “paralyzes” the muscle and when the contraction does not occur, we do not make the wrinkle!  Treatment can also allow for the skin to repair during this time.

Botox is very safe when administered by a professional.  The treatment is quick usually taking 15-30 minutes. Botox treatments are temporary and last an average of 3-4 months. Schedule your consultation today to learn it may be right for you.
